Learn English - Pronunciation of ED sounds in the regular verbs

In English, there are regular and irregular verbs. The regular verbs in the past always finish with ED and that's great because we can easily remember them :-)

However, there is something tricky about the regular verbs! The pronunciation.

There are 3 different pronunciations for the ED in the regular verbs in the past: /d/, /t/ and /id/

Now, how do we know which pronunciation is the correct one?

First, you must know that in English there are voiced sounds and unvoiced sounds.Look at the image below to learn those sounds:
When the verb finishes with a voiced sound in its infinitive form, then the ED sound is voiced too, so it's pronounced /d/.

Examples: call - called, amaze - amazed, enjoy- enjoyed, clean - cleaned, play- played

When the verb finishes with an unvoiced sound in its infinitive form, then the ED sound is unvoiced too, so it's pronounced /t/.

Examples: work - worked, help - helped, kiss- kissed, watch - watched

Finally, when the verb finished with the sounds of /t/ or /d/ in its infinitive form, then it's pronounced /id/.

Examples: to visit- visited, to need - needed, to want - wanted.

We also recommend you watch another video that shows regular verbs in the past in songs. It is certainly going to help better pronounce the regular verbs in the past. The video is by teacher Luiz Otávio Barros. Click here to watch it.
