“The Amazing Effects of Gratitude”
1- Watch the following video no more than twice (no pauses allowed) and then, answer the questions.
A- According to the Roman philosopher Cicero… What is gratitude?
B- According to scientists… Is gratitude a basic emotion?
C- Has gratitude been studied by scientists in the last 100 years?
D- Is gratitude associated with the brain activity? If so, in which areas?
E- In a study, how long did people write down 3 things that went well each day and why? What happened after 6 months?
F- Does gratitude improve your health? What do the studies say?
G- Write the expression that is used as a synonym of gratitude: _______ ________ _______
H- Do you agree with this expression? “Being grateful makes people happier and healthier”

2- Vocabulary! Let's expand our vocabulary now by learning other ways to say “Thank you”
- If you want to emphasize your gratitude, or be very polite, you can say the above expressions.
“Thank you so much for helping me out today.”
“You’re looking well.” “Thanks.”
“Thank you very much for dinner – it was great.”
“Thanks a lot for looking after the children.”
“Thanks very much for making dinner tonight.”
“You’re looking well.” “Thanks.”

- This is an informal way of thanking someone:
“I loved the present, thanks a bunch!”
- This expression is a very formal way of thanking someone for something they have done for you:
“I am much obliged to you for your patience during the recent difficulties.”
“You can use the facilities whilst you are in the club”. “Much obliged.”
“You can use the facilities whilst you are in the club”. “Much obliged.”
- The above expressions are informal ways of thanking someone who has helped you in a difficult situation:
“Thanks for giving me a lift to the station. You saved my life.”
“Thanks for the advice. I owe you one.”
“Thanks for helping me out with the essay. I owe you big time.”
“Thanks for the advice. I owe you one.”

- This is another informal way of thanking someone which is frequently used in British English.
“Here’s that book you wanted to borrow.” “Oh, cheers.”
“Would you like a drink?” “That’d be great. Cheers.”

- This is a formal way of saying thank you used in letters and emails:
“Many thanks for the lovely present.”
ACTIVITY: Choose 3 of the expressions above and make some sentences exemplifying the differents situations/contexts in which you'd use them!
