FREQUENCY ADVERBS: How often do you go to the beach?
In English, we use specific words to describe the frequency of activities in general. Those words are called Frequency Adverbs. In the chart below, it is possible to understand what is the use of each adverb, according to the frequency in which you do something.
NEVER and ALWAYS are opposite words: "never" is used for things you don't do, while "always" is used for things you do very frequently.
There are other words, other than the ones in the chart, to describe frequency:
- NORMALLY is the same as USUALLY
- OCASIONALLY is less than SOMETIMES
- NOT VERY OFTEN is between SELDOM and SOMETIMES
- HARDLY EVER is the same as RARELY, and can also be said as ALMOST NEVER
The question to ask about the frequency is: HOW OFTEN….?
This question means "what is the frequency of something".
For example:
QUESTION: How often do you go out for dinner?
ANSWER: I usually go out for dinner.
You can also use other words and expressions to describe the frequency of something, especially the ones using days, weeks, months, years etc.
For example:
QUESTION: How often do you go out for dinner?
ANSWER: I go out for dinner every week. / I go out for dinner once a month. / I go out for dinner three times a week.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE POSITION OF THE ADVERBS in the sentence!
✱ The frequency adverbs are usually before the main verb, or between the auxiliary and the main verb.
I usually have lunch at home. I never go out at night.
✱ But they come after the verb to be.
She is never late to class. It rarely rains. The sky is always clear.
✱ You can also use frequency adverbs at the beggining or end of a sentence. That is useful for emphasis.
Ocasionally I meet him for dinner. She shows up for the meetings rarely.
Sometimes I think about her. Usually I go to sleep at 10pm.
