The Olympic Games - English Activity

The Olympic Games are an international sports competition which are held every four years in a different city. This year they are held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  Thousands of athletes from all over the world compete against each other in individual and team sports. Los Juegos Olímpicos son una competición deportiva internacional que se realizan cada cuatro años en una ciudad diferente. Este año se llevan a cabo en Río de Janeiro, Brasil. Milhares de atletas de todo o mundo competem em esportes individuais e coletivos. Mais de 1 bilhão de pessoas assistem aos jogos na televisão. 1. SYMBOLS and VALUES

a. The OLYMPIC RINGS.
To give an identity to the games and the Olympic movement, a symbol was created. The meaning and the values of olympism are conveyed by symbols that transmit a message.
To show universality, the five are interlocked. They represent the meeting of athletes of the world during the Olympic Games.
The rings have colours to show unity and friendship. The five colours represent all the flags in the world. Can you name different countries according to the colours of the rings?

b. The Olympic MOTTO.
By motto we mean a phrase which sums up a life philosophy or a code of conduct to follow. The Olympic motto is made up of three Latin words: Citius, Altius, and Fortius that mean FASTER, HIGHER and STRONGER. These three words encourage athletes to give their best during competition.
Do you think athletes follow this code of conduct? Why?
c. The FLAME.
The Olympic flame is one of the best-known features of the Games. From the moment the flame is lit, a very precise ritual is laid down:
  • The lighting. In memory of the Olympic Games’ ancient origins, the flame is lit in Olympia (Greece) some months before the opening of the Games. The Olympic flame can only be lit by the sun’s rays.
  • The torch. A new torch is created for each edition of the Games. The flame is passed from runner to runner and cannot be extinguished during the Games.
  • The relay route. The passage of the flame announces the upcoming Olympic Games to the inhabitants along the route and allows those following its journey to discover new cultures and customs.
d. The VALUES.

The values involved in the Olympic symbol are EXCELLENCE, FRIENDSHIP and RESPECT.


  • Excellence: To give one’s best; not only to win but also to be and do one’s best in daily life.
  • Friendship: To build a peaceful and better world thanks to sports, through solidarity, team spirit, joy and optimism, despite the differences.
  • Respect: To respect oneself, one’s body, to respect others, rules and regulations, as well as the environment.

2. The Olympic MASCOTS.

Can you name any Olympic mascot?

This year Olympic mascot is VINICIUS. Named after one of Brazil’s most prominent 20th century cultural icons, Vinicius des Moraes, the mascot for the Olympic Games Rio 2016 constitutes a blend of animals native to Brazil, and symbolizes the energy and joie lived by the Brazilian people. His design takes inspiration from pop culture, as well as video game and animation characters. Alongside his Paralympic Games colleague, Vinicius represents the diversity of the Brazilian people and culture, as well as its exuberant nature.
