Machu Picchu is an Incan city surrounded by temples, terraces and water channels, built on a mountaintop. It was built with huge blocks of stone joined to each other without any mortar. Today it has been designated cultural heritage of humanity in recognition of its political, religious and administrative importance during the age of the Incas.
Machu Picchu means Old Mountain, taking its name from the location of the Incan citadel.
According to historians, the architectural complex was built in the 15th century, approximately, by the Inca Pachacutec.
Its exact location is in the Machu Picchu district, province of Urubamba, 70 miles northeast of the city of Cusco.

Machu Picchu was linked to the entire Inca Empire via the Qhapaq Ñan, the famous roads of the Incas.

Temperature range from a low of 43º F to a high of 70º F.

The citadel is divided into two areas: the agricultural area consisting of the terraces, and the urban section, which served administrative purposes.

The average altitude of the citadel is 2450 metres above sea level.

The mountains of Wayna Picchu and Machu Picchu are perfect for taking panoramic photos of the entire architectural complex.
The local currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol S/. ( Sol means sun). You can exchange US dollars or Euros at almost any place, banks, money changing offices, hotels, restaurants and with street money changers. Beware of false notes. You are better off exchanging at money changing offices or banks. It  is  better to obtain your Soles in Peru than in your home country as you will obtain better exchange rates but beware of fraudulent notes and unofficial money traders offering you lucrative deals on the streets.

Machu Picchu is open year-round. October through April is the official rainy season, but it can rain at any time. And while peak season is July and August, you should always expect crowds. Sundays can be the most crowded, because that’s when people who live in the Cusco province are allowed into the site for free. The Inca trail to Machu Picchu is closed during rainy season. If you go on February you can visit great places in Peru like the Pacific coast, beaches, and even the jungle areas around Iquitos. Winter in Peru is the best time for visiting Machu Picchu and other mountain destinations since the temperature is not that much different than in Summer.

In Machu Picchu it can be very hot during the day and very cold at night, so you must take a pair of shorts and T-shirts to be comfortable during the day and a pair of trousers and a jacket to keep warm when the sun sets. Hiking boots or trainers are essential to explore the ruins and climb mountains.

You should not forget to take sun cream to protect your skin from the sun. You should also take your camera to take photos and, if you want, some binoculars to observe wildlife and distant places. There are some flies, so a good repellent is very important. And don’t forget to take a comfortable backpack to carry your things with you during the day.
